Ecological Footprint

What is an Eco- Footprint?

An eco-footprint is an individuals impact upon earth or, on a larger scale, humanity's demand upon our planet's ecosystems. All of the resources we use have to come from somewhere and their price isn't free. Water, plants, fossil fuels, and animal life in both the seas and on land; All are examples of the things humanity uses in day to day life. Humans depend upon these and more things in order for survival. The issues arise when we surpass our basic dependency and take too much.

We often times don't think about where the materials for all of our activities come from however, with each passing day it becomes increasingly relevant in our lives. It is an indisputable fact that, as a species, the rate at which we use resources far surpasses the rate in which nature can replace them. To put it simply, our ecological impact is far too large.

Importance of Awareness

The human population is currently exploding. As our numbers increase, so does the land that's require to support us. This combined with the average first world country's lifestyle is devastating. Currently, we are using resources at a rate 3+ times faster than the planet can sustain. This system can only be supported a short while before an inevitable collapse. By spreading awareness of ecological footprints we can hope  to minimize the damage and maybe, just maybe, get back to sustainable levels in the years to come.
