Surrealism

Surrealism is an art form  that came into use in the early 1900s. Surrealism was meant to be a form of pure expression of the subconcious, conjuring up the bizarre and dreamlike images that lay deep within the artist's imagination. Free association was a method commonly used and bring together elements that seemingly had been seperate entities.  Surrealism came in many forms icluding poetry, other forms of literature, paints, pastels, and sculptures.

Some of the first artists to incorporate surrealist techniques or to work about the genre with visual art were André Masson, Joan Miró, Man Ray. Perhaps the most well known searrealism artist was Salvador Dali. Contrary to popular belief, Dali was not the creator of this art type however he was deeply influenced by it and brought his own elements of creation to the table.
